Into Thine Hand

Greetings,

Sad news reaches us today from Afghanistan.  The Canadians have lost five, including four soldiers and a journalist.  Other reports say that we lost eight of our own CIA people.  Deepest condolences to the Canadians, our people at CIA, and thier families.

While many people celebrate the New Year, others will begin the year with no joy.  Some will embark on 2010 knowing they will fight through the year, unless the hand of God reaches down and takes them home.  Tonight, I will watch the ball drop from Hong Kong with only silence and no celebration.

Please see the final dispatch for 2009:  Into Thine Hand

Very Respectfully,

Thank you all very much for providing my husband with a care package after he was injured.

Thank you all very much for providing my husband with a care package after he was injured.

On Dec 22nd my husband, SSG XXX, was transported to the Tramatic Brain Injury hospital in Balad. He recieved shirts and pants from you to make his stay more comfortable as he recovers from the IED injury he was hit by on Dec. 21st.

He was so happy that herecieved something. May it be small or large, a gift from the heart warms the soul. You showed my soldier love in his time of need and I appreciate that more than I can express.

'Thank you for being such good people fighting for the best cause of all, the love and respect of those serving.

DETAILS ABOUT SOLDIERS' ANGELS FIRST RESPONSE BACK PACK?

The U.S. Military provides what can only be described as extraordinary care to our wounded military personnel. No expense is spared to treat a wounded serviceman or women. Soldiers' Angels has, however, put together a backpack which can be given to each wounded soldier as they arrive at the combat support hospitals in Iraq and Afghanistan. When our wounded arrive at these hospitals they often have only what they were wearing in the battlefield and considering they were injured, it usually is not in very good condition. It can take up to a couple of days before they receive replacement supplies and it is often weeks before their belongings catch up to them. The military does all it can to provide for our wounded heroes and more than meets his or hers basic needs. These backpacks, however, ensure that our wounded soldiers have a little love from home to comfort them until their family can reach them and/or they return to the states. A wounded soldier certainly can wear a hospital gown for the first 24 hours before his replacement clothing is issued, but having a quick change of clothing is priceless. Your donation will send a backpack directly to a wounded hero in urgent need.

Holiday Message 2009

As America celebrates this holiday season, our Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen and Coast Guardsmen are serving around the world.  Families and friends at home can enjoy the holidays in peace thanks to your sacrifice.   In the midst of glad tidings, we honor your service and that of your families who serve along with you.

Our thoughts and prayers are especially with our wounded warriors, their families, and the families of the fallen.  They bear solemn burdens often made heavier by absence.  We all must do our part to honor them and ensure they do not shoulder their cares in solitude this holiday season.  America's finest families richly deserve the love and thanks of a grateful Nation, and we will never forget their sacrifice.

On behalf of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and our families, I thank you for all you do for our country.  We wish you and your families a joyful holiday season, and all of the blessings of a very happy New Year.

ADOPT A HERO TODAY PLEASE>..........

Soldiers' Angels hero adoption waiting list is over 2,000. Many of our heroes are on their third or fourth deployment. Sure, they may be getting some mail or care packages from home, but nothing means more than knowing a complete stranger cares enough to show their support.

When you adopt a hero, you are asked to commit a letter a week and 1-2 small care packages a month during the length of their deployment. Soldiers' Angels Store ( www.AngelsStore.org ) has plenty of pre-made packages and will ship them directly to your hero. For as little as $20 a month you can bring some support for someone who is putting their life on the line for us. Adopt a hero www.soldiersangels.org

Soldiers' Angels is a volunteer-led 501(c)(3) of over 200,000 people providing aid and comfort to the men and women of the United States Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard, as well as veterans and military families. Seasons Greetings

Hello Angels and friends,

I would like to take this time to wish you a happy holiday season. It has been a great year for the Soldiers' Angels and we couldn't have done it without supporters and volunteers such as yourself.

While everyone plays an very important role in the Global War on Terror, a group of very dedicated service members appear to fly under the radar day in and day out, that team is located at the Air Force Mortuary Affairs Operations Center. It is the center's mission and privilege to fulfill the nation's sacred commitment of ensuring dignity, honor, and respect to the fallen and care, service, and support to their families. A solemn dignified transfer of remains is conducted upon arrival at Dover Air Force Base, Del., from the aircraft to a transfer vehicle to honor those who have given their lives in the service of the country. The vehicle then moves the fallen to the Port Mortuary.

AFMAO has a total force staff consisting of active duty Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines as well as Guardsmen, Reservists and civilians. The staff also consists of representatives from federal agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Armed Forces Medical Examiner who are responsible for the complete processing of remains. The staff utilizes state-of-the-art equipment to establish positive identification through DNA, dental and fingerprint analysis and autopsy the remains to determine cause of death. The staff also prepares fallen members for transport to their final destination as determined by the family.

Soldiers' Angels has taken these service members under our wings and encourage you to send notes of support throughout the year to:

Air Force Mortuary Affairs Operations Center

Mr. Todd Rose-Chief of Air Force Mortuary Affairs

116 Purple Heart Drive
Dover AFB, DE 19902

We recently received a note of appreciation back from the team:

"The Public Affairs Office at the Air Force Mortuary Affairs Operations Center at Dover AFB, Del. has been receiving your cards and well wishes over the last several days. We post these notes where all in the center can see them and read your kind words of thanks. Many of staff here at AFMAO are Guard, Reserve and Active Duty military members deployed from across our nation to support this vital mission. They are away from their families during this time and your notes are certainly helping to bring holiday cheer. Thank you for your support!" Lt. Shannon Mann

Please live every day like it is a holiday, being thankful and spending time with your family and friends; appreciating what you have been given with the gift of freedom that our service members provide to us every day.

I wish you health, comfort, and prosperity this holiday season. Season's Greetings.

ISFAC FACTS: December 18, 2009

December 18, 2009-

A Holiday note from MG David Sprynczynatyk (see attached card.)

As we enter the 2009 holiday season, Connie and I thank you for your shared
commitment to serving our state and country. We wish all of the blessings of
this holiday season for you and your family.

MG Sprynczynatyk

Hello ISFAC members-

The crisp December air, colorful and bright decorations, and hustle and bustle of people shopping at stores during the holidays bring a sense of anticipation and excitement for some people but feelings of loneliness and stress for others. Check out this great video by "Camouflage and Christmas Lights" from Rodney Carrington's Make It Christmas CD. This video is for all those in the military that will be away from home this Christmas. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6p7HtoYlwY ). Hopefully it will aid in bringing some holiday cheer to those with loved ones so far away.

The Fargo Airsho was awarded by the Blue Angels, the "Air Show of the year for 2009" award at the ICAS meeting in Vegas last week. This speaks volumes for the caliber of what we showcase with our military here in North Dakota. The NDANG had a great deal to do with the success of that event- kudos to them for making it happen.

Welcome to Col. Rick D. Gibney the new NDANG 119th Wing Commander. He follows the footsteps of Col Beckland who is now working in DC.

I am making my official move to Bismarck from Grand Forks this weekend. Most people will not notice that I am NOT in Grand Forks, as my role with Soldiers' Angels across the state will be just as strong. For those of you needing to get in touch with me, my cell phone will remain the same- (218) 779-7271.

Any new events or changes to events on this list, I will highlight in RED so you can skim through this listing without having to look at everything on a weekly basis. I encourage every member of ISFAC to become more engaged in sharing events and activities. Please send me (shellemichaels@msn.com) your copy and paste ready ONLY (see event listing for format) information by Thursday of each week.

A gentle REMINDER that ISFAC members have requested to use this method of communication to share information vs. getting many emails from everyone each week.

Wishing you the very best of the holiday season.

Shelle Michaels, Soldiers' Angels

Tips for a Safer Holiday Season: Commentary by Rod Krause
5th Bomb Wing Ground Safety Office

12/14/2009 - MINOT AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. -- The holidays provide a wonderful opportunity for family and friends to gather and celebrate. It is also a time of continuous activity, with errands to run and scheduled activities that demand attention and time. It's also a time when busy people can become careless and vulnerable to theft and other holiday crime. The following tips can help you be more careful, prepared and aware during the holiday season.

Already this holiday season there have been tragic incidents around the country; so it's a good time to remind everyone of the dangers that lurk out there if you don't follow some simple safety rules. Obviously, some crimes occur in busy areas during broad daylight, but thieves usually prefer more secluded areas that aren't well-lit. Many thefts occur because we're not paying attention to business. Women's purses are especially easy targets when they are left in a shopping cart. Thieves rely on the trust that good people place in others. Some people go Christmas shopping and get very intrigued by items on the lower shelf. A person might never think that an older woman would steal something from them when their eyes are diverted for just a moment, but this type of theft occurs more often than people realize it does. Thieves can take on any type of personality and have any type of body style.

Here are some holidays shopping safety tips from various websites our office would like to pass along:

  • Stay alert at all times and pay attention to your surroundings.
  • Park in well-lit spaces, always lock your car, roll up the windows, and hide packages in the trunk or under a blanket.
  • Don't overload yourself with packages, have your car keys in hand before heading to the parking lot.
  • Do not leave your purse unattended and avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Whenever possible, use credit cards or checks instead. Carry only the credit cards you need.
  • When using public rest rooms, be cautious; avoid putting your purse on the floor.
  • Keep receipts separate from the packages; this will make it harder for the thief to refund the stolen items.
  • Remain alert in parking lots; don't carry so many packages that you aren't aware of your surroundings and personal safety and shop during the daytime, if possible.
  • Walk confidently, with your head up, and stay in well-lighted and well-traveled areas, and have your vehicle key in hand and ready when walking to your car.
  • Visually check the backseat before opening the door, and lock your doors immediately when inside, when loading your purchases into your vehicle, place your purse in the vehicle first, so it's not in the cart while your back is turned.

Shopping with Children:

  • Teach your children to go to a store clerk or security guard if they get separated from you in a shopping mall.
  • Keep children under age 4 in a stroller or supervise them closely.
  • If you place your child in a shopping cart, always use the safety belt, and stay close to the cart and never let your child stand in or push a shopping cart.

Toy Safety:

  • Make sure the toys you give children are safe for them. Read the package labels and follow age recommendation.
  • Do not give children under the age of 3 toys that contain small or metal parts or toys that break easily and can be swallowed.
  • Do not give children under the age of 8 toys that have sharp edges, points, or heating elements.
  • Include helmets and other protective gear (such as elbow, knee, and wrist pads) when giving bicycles, skates, or skateboards as gifts.
  • Dispose of toy packaging properly (do not burn in fireplace). Keep packaging materials away from children because they can become a choking or suffocation hazard.
  • Keep batteries away from children. They are toxic if swallowed.
  • We realize this alert might put a damper on your holiday spirit, but being safe is much better than being sorry. By taking a few prevention measures can help keep your holiday season joyous!

Grand Forks transitions from tankers to UAVs

12/17/2009 - SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- The primary mission at Grand Forks Air Force Base, N.D., is transitioning from KC-135 aerial refueling aircraft to support for launch, recovery and maintenance of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, or UAVs.

The transition will begin with the departure of the base's final KC-135 in December 2010. The new mission to support UAVs will begin in mid-2013.

In preparation for the RQ-4 Global Hawk, a Battlefield Airborne Communications Node Mission Control Element will be transferred to Grand Forks AFB in the Fall of 2011 based upon the completion of an Environmental Impact Statement. The Mission Control Element will establish RQ-4 synergies and maintain the workforce skill-sets required in anticipation of the Global Hawk's arrival after initial operational test and evaluation has been completed.

Although there is about a two-and-a-half-year gap between the tanker and UAV missions, Air Mobility Command officials said Grand Forks AFB will remain a viable, active military installation even after the final KC-135 departs.

AMC officials said the Air Force is committed to basing the RQ-4 Global Hawk at Grand Forks AFB.

Officials also said the decision to provide this mission is the result of a deliberate, measured and transparent process, and the Air Force looks forward to working with the Grand Forks AFB community to ensure any concerns are addressed.

Thunderbirds on their way to the Grand Forks Air Force Base.

GRAND FORKS AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. -- The United States Air Force Thunderbirds will highlight the Grand Forks Air Expo on May 22, 2010, here.

"Thunder over the Red River" will be the first air show at Grand Forks Air Force Base in four years.

"We are very excited to host the Thunderbirds during our upcoming air show," said Col. Don Shaffer, 319th Air Refueling Wing commander. "We are expecting a great turn-out, especially since this will be the region's only air show next year."

The theme for the air show is "Proud History - Bright Future."

"The air show will celebrate our proud heritage and past missions of Grand Forks AFB, while at the same time highlighting new technologies and our future missions," said Lt. Col. Bradley S. Baugh, 319th Operations Support Squadron director of operations.

Other aerial and ground displays are also in the works for the air show.

Fargo, N.D. -- Col Robert J. Becklund will officially relinquish command of the 119th Wing to Col. Rick D. Gibney during a Change of Command Ceremony at the N.D. Air National Guard base on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

Currently, Gibney serves as the J-5 Director at the N.D. National Guard Joint Force Headquarters in Bismarck. His responsibilities include overseeing all activities involving strategic planning, international affairs and organizational development programs. Prior to that assignment, he served as commander of the 178th Reconnaissance Squadron at the 119th Wing. In that position he was responsible for the establishment and the day to day operations of the MQ-1 Predator Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) mission.

"I am confident that Col. Gibney will excel in his role as the 119th Wing Commander. His experience and leadership throughout his career has prepared him to move the organization into the future. His character will ensure that the 119th Wing continues on the path of excellence and builds upon the strengths of these men and women who stand ready to serve their nation and community," said Maj. Gen. David Sprynczynatyk, N.D. National Guard adjutant general.

Becklund, who has served as commander of the 119th Wing since August 2004, oversaw the unit's largest transformations in its history. During his tenure, the 119th Wing ended a 60-year fighter mission and assumed the current missions of flying the C-21 Lear Jet and operating the MQ-1 Predator UAS.

Becklund recently moved to Washington D.C. to take on a new assignment with the U.S. Air Force UAS Task Force.

"Col. Becklund will certainly be missed as the 119th Wing commander, but I know his position and influence will continue to benefit the N.D. Air National Guard and our state," said Sprynczynatyk. "This is a very prestigious and challenging position, but I know of no one more qualified than Bob. He is a strong leader who understands the importance and the future of UAS in the Air Force. I have no doubt he will bring great success to this new undertaking."

Media is invited to attend this event. Please contact Penny Ripperger, 119th Wing public affairs officer, at 701-451-2194 to arrange a media escort on base.

VA reaches out to Guard members with 'seven touches' program

WASHINGTON -- The Department of Veterans Affairs recently implemented many new initiatives and programs as a way to specifically engage National Guard and Reserve veterans who have been deployed, VA Secretary Eric K. Shinseki said Nov. 19.

Called the "Seven Touches of Outreach" the goal of the program is to "engage Guard and Reserve veterans at least seven times during the deployment cycle with targeted messages and face-to-face encounters with VA staff members,"
Shinseki told an audience at the National Guard's Joint Senior Leadership Conference held here.

"With this generation, a letter in the mail doesn't cut it anymore," said Shinseki. "There has to be personal contact for the message to get across."

Those engagements start when servicemembers arrive at the demobilization site from theatre.

"They receive an overview on VA services and benefits and are enrolled in VA healthcare," said Shinseki. "Members are assigned an OEF/OIF program manager to contact, who will set up their initial health and dental appointments at the VA facility of their choice."

And during that demob process, servicemembers are required to fill out the Post-Deployment Health Reassessment, meet with a healthcare provider and self-evaluate his health status as compared to how is was prior to the deployment.

"VA supports the health assessment conducted by Department of Defense providers and is able to link (reserve component) veterans with appointments to VA for mental health or other follow-up requirements," said Shinseki.

He added that of 298,000 RC veterans screened, 107,000 have been referred for further evaluation, 61,500 members received appointments for healthcare and 25,000 to vet centers for readjustment counseling.

And for those who may need assistance once they return to their state, Transitional Assistance Advisors have been set-up in each state, who work with the adjutant general to link Guard members with VA services.

"TAAs have reached out to (more than) 360,000 RC veterans and referred (more
than) 76,000 to VA for services or benefits," said Shenseki.

Additionally, as part of the Yellow Ribbon Program, the VA sends representatives to reintegration programs that returning Guard members attend 30, 60 and 90 days after returning from deployment.

Another way the VA makes direct contact with Guardmembers returning from deployment is through the Combat Veteran Call Center, where VA representatives contact those Guard members directly to advise them of VA benefits and ensure they are aware of the services they are able to obtain from the VA.

"In its first year, the call center made over 700,000 phone calls and either contacted or left messages for 515,000 reserve component members," said Shinseki.

The goal is to ensure those who need care get the care they need, said Shinseki, reiterating that Guard members returning from combat tours are entitled to five years of free VA healthcare and 180 days to obtain a one-time dental evaluation and treatment.

"We are re-engineering our business processes -- fundamentally challenging all our assumptions for why we process the way we do -- and bringing latest technologies into our workspace in order to connect to all our veterans, especially our youngest, with better, faster, higher-quality decisions and services," said Shinseki. "How fast is fast? I don't know, but that is what we are going to find out."

Commentary by Gen. Raymond E. Johns, Jr.
Air Mobility Command commander

12/15/2009 - SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. -- Since taking command just four short weeks ago, I can honestly say I'm more excited than ever to be back in AMC! Whether I am visiting our Guard and Reserve partners on the East Coast or our deployed Airmen in Southwest Asia, it is clear to me you are the finest Airmen in the U.S. Air Force. The intensity and overwhelming passion with which you accomplish your mission impresses me.

You and your family are the heartbeat of this great command. Your tireless efforts and extraordinary teamwork gets our mission done.

This holiday is a time to celebrate and relax with family and friends--you've earned it--but please make safety a priority. Don't let drinking and driving, fatigue, speeding, or failure to use seatbelts ruin your holiday. Have a plan before you set out, and stick to it. I want to see each of you after the holidays strong and healthy.

Holidays can also be a stressful time, especially for those who can't be near their loved ones. Remember those who are spending the holidays alone and let them know you care. Make their holiday a little brighter with a phone call; invite them to dinner or by keeping them in your thoughts and prayers.

It's an honor to be your commander. Your incredible spirit makes our command and Air Force great. From the Johns family to yours, please have a joyful holiday season and we look forward to seeing you all in the New Year

WHAT IS ISFAC?

The Interservice Family Assistance Committee (ISFAC) is a voluntary military cooperative partnership organized to provide multi-service networking for training and assistance to ensure Total Force Family Readiness.

Our purpose is to provide assistance to families regardless of service component.

The goal of the ISFAC is to strengthen existing family assistance delivery systems in the event of mobilization, deployment, or natural disaster through the interaction of committee members.

Many issues surrounding quality of life and family well-being can only be addressed by states. Across the nation current focuses are being developed in regards to spouse employment, including unemployment compensation for transferring military spouses, in-state tuition allowances, financial readiness, education, and the pressing needs of severely injured service members and their families. Many state leaders share our concern for the welfare of our Active Duty, Guard, and Reserve service members and their families living within their borders, and we look forward to making significant progress in the future.

North Dakota ISFAC is currently focusing on six key topics; family support, educational benefits, license and registration benefits, tax and financial breaks, state employee
benefits and other special protections.
