DOT uses fatal car accident in new PSA to send dramatic message

DOT uses fatal car accident in new PSA to send dramatic message http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNYLEEQQzdE

Sandra Kilde of Beulah turned 67 on Dec. 30, 2009.

She died the following day from injuries sustained in a head-on crash — the other driver, who had been drinking, died at the scene.

The tragic story that affected the lives of two families is the focus of a new North Dakota Department of Transportation public service  announcement campaign on drinking and driving.

At the center of the one-minute video spot is Steve Kilde, a lieutenant with the Bismarck Police Department, Sandra Kilde's son.

The video contains actual audio as a motorist following the drunken driver talks with a 911 dispatcher right up to the time of the collision.

Mark Nelson, safety division director for the DOT, said the department annually produces safety campaigns on drinking and driving.

This one is different, he said.

Nelson said the PSA, which was posted on the DOT's Facebook page on its website, had generated about 100 views in just a few hours.

Nelson said when developing a drinking and driving  campaign, the primary target audience officials hope to reach is the 18-34 age group, something that can be difficult to achieve through conventional television and radio messages.

Nelson said in recent years the DOT has incorporated social media more and more into its safety campaigns although in this case, it was posted a bit earlier than planned by members of the Kilde family on Facebook.

That's OK though, Nelson said. "As long as people are seeing it."

Steve Kilde's comments in the PSA are honest and genuine and something most everyone can relate to.

"It makes a big impact," Nelson said. "It's a very powerful message."

For Steve Kilde and his family, telling their story was something they felt they had to do.

With 23 years in law enforcement, much of it in Mercer County where the accident happened, Kilde has been on both sides of death notifications involving drinking and driving fatalities.

He said his family contacted the family of the other driver and discussed the campaign beforehand.

"First of all, we bear no ill will against them at all," he said. "We realize this is not a situation unique to us ... they were as much of victim as we were," Kilde said. "There is a 7-year-old boy who will have to grow up without his mother."

In doing the PSA, Kilde said it was difficult at times to separate the professional from the personal, but it was something he felt compelled to do.

Kilde's father, Vince, died earlier in the year and he said it's what his parents would have wanted.

"If some good can come out of this, that is what we want," he said.

With the message out on the Web, it may possibly reach people it might not otherwise have.

Kilde said if people share the story with others, some good may well come from a tragedy that affected both families.

"I spent a career trying to prevent this ... if you touch a few people, that always has to be your goal."

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR MFN TEAM
As the dog days of summer come to an end and autumn closes in on the horizon, we begin to feel a sense of urgency for summer projects left undone and the clear knowing that as the new school year begins and the holiday seasons unfold, that our lives will become busier and our time more treasured.
How different from only weeks ago!
When spring approaches, with its newness and hope, we are energized and inspired to think big thoughts with confident can-do attitudes: "Sure, I'll clean out that garage and attic! Yes, I'm tackling that family photo project! You bet it'll be my best garden ever!" "Second language? No problem!"
And, it's all going to happen this summer.
But fall, always serious and overshadowing, seems to sneak up on us with a rush of duty, leaving us scrambling to tie up matters, finish projects, "store away our acorns for the winter" and get the kids in bed on time.
Then, more quickly than the blink of an eye, August comes rolling around and reality sets in. It's a sobering moment: "Where has all the time gone?"
No doubt about it: August is a transitioning month. But if we stop there, we miss out on some very important gifts that this month has to offer.
August gives us an opportunity to review and reflect about our summer accomplishments and our memories of recent vacations - far from home, close to home, across the street in the neighbor's pool, or just hanging out watching glorious sun sets. We get a rare moment to catch a glimpse of ourselves enjoying our lives and the people we have in those lives. And, if we're fortunate enough to step out of the moment, we can let that vision settle in slowly, warmly to the backs of our mind to be plucked later, for daydreaming, during winter's deep chill.
So then, as the world prepares for back to school and the bustling holiday months ahead, let's rest here a bit to enjoy this feeling of ease and satisfaction. We're in no hurry today.
Until Next Month (or you can email us at connections@MilitaryFamilyNetwork.com if you just can't wait!),

ORGANIZATION IN THE SPOTLIGHT
"Wow, you really drew that?"
The Wounded Artist Project

The Wounded Artist Project is sending art kits (currently our Beginner kits) to war wounded, ill and injured, and their caregivers (parents, spouses, etc.), recovering in military medical facilities or at home across the US.  This includes also PTSD and TBI.
While art is recognized as a good method to pull out trauma in a person's life, we will be focusing on having the wounded develop art skills that may lead them to deciding on a college major or career.  We have a YouTube channel with introductory art instruction videos for anyone to access.
We imagine that someone who does a lot of perspective drawing may decide to become an architect or urban planner; those drawing the human body (especially after following their own charts and operations) may become a medical or scientific illustrator, a nurse or even a physiologist;  those drawing cars and mechanical stuff may go into product design. We stress that the kits alone don't make someone become an architect or an MD; they still face a lot of work ahead of them.
We are sure that someone, someday will look over the shoulder a wounded GI sitting in a hospital bed using one of our kits, and ask, "Wow, you really drew that?"
Contact ray@thewoundedartistproject.org for more details and to volunteer.
How You Can Help: The Wounded Artist Project is a Michigan-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that sends art kits to war wounded recovering in military hospitals. We are in start-up mode and need funding and/or donations. They are tax-deductible.  It costs us approximately $25 to produce one BEGINNER's kit. Visit The Wounded Artist Project website to support our wounded service members or to request additional information about how you can help: this link is just a click away!

Iraq - from the Commander in Chief

Tonight marks the end of the American combat mission in Iraq.

As a candidate for this office, I pledged to end this war responsibly. And, as President, that is what I am doing.

Since I became Commander-in-Chief, we've brought home nearly 100,000 U.S. troops. We've closed or turned over to Iraq hundreds of our bases.

As Operation Iraqi Freedom ends, our commitment to a sovereign, stable, and self-reliant Iraq continues. Under Operation New Dawn, a transitional force of U.S. troops will remain to advise and assist Iraqi forces, protect our civilians on the ground, and pursue targeted counterterrorism efforts.

By the end of next year, consistent with our agreement with the Iraqi government, these men and women, too, will come home.

Ending this war is not only in Iraq's interest -- it is in our own. Our nation has paid a huge price to put Iraq's future in the hands of its people. We have sent our men and women in uniform to make enormous sacrifices. We have spent vast resources abroad in the face of several years of recession at home.

We have met our responsibility through the courage and resolve of our women and men in uniform.

In seven years, they confronted a mission as challenging and as complex as any our military has ever been asked to face.

Nearly 1.5 million Americans put their lives on the line. Many returned for multiple tours of duty, far from their loved ones who bore a heroic burden of their own. And most painfully, more than 4,400 Americans have given their lives, fighting for people they never knew, for values that have defined our people for more than two centuries.

What their country asked of them was not small. And what they sacrificed was not easy.

For that, each and every American owes them our heartfelt thanks.

Our promise to them -- to each woman or man who has donned our colors -- is that our country will serve them as faithfully as they have served us. We have already made the largest increase in funding for veterans in decades. So long as I am President, I will do whatever it takes to fulfill that sacred trust.

Tonight, we mark a milestone in our nation's history. Even at a time of great uncertainty for so many Americans, this day and our brave troops remind us that our future is in our own hands and that our best days lie ahead.

Thank you,

President Barack Obama

Former North Dakota National Guard Adjutant General Passes Away

BISMARCK, N.D. — Retired Maj. Gen. C. Emerson Murry passed away on Aug. 29 at age 86 at his Bismarck home. Murry, a World War II Veteran, served as adjutant general of the North Dakota National Guard from 1975 to 1984.

"A dedicated patriot, C. Emerson Murry served his state and nation in uniform during wartime and during peacetime for more than 30 years," said Maj. Gen. David Sprynczynatyk, North Dakota adjutant general.

In 1942, Murry interrupted his college studies to enlist in the U.S. Army during World War II and served as an infantryman in the European theater with the 17th and 82nd Airborne Divisions. He participated in several major campaigns, to include the Battle of the Bulge in 1944. After Germany's surrender, he performed occupation duty in Berlin. Upon returning to the United States in 1946, he participated in the New York City WWII Victory Parade before receiving a discharge as a sergeant and returning home to North Dakota.

He immediately resumed his studies, graduating from the University of North Dakota in 1950 with a Juris Doctor degree. As an attorney, he served as head of the North Dakota Legislative Council in 1951, a position he held for more than 25 years. In 1955, he joined the North Dakota National Guard as a Judge Advocate General officer, serving in positions of increasing responsibility until his appointment to adjutant general by then Gov. Arthur A. Link.

During his tenure as adjutant general in 1983, the North Dakota National Guard boasted a membership rate of 124% of authorized strength.

"Under his watch, the North Dakota National Guard grew into a premier organization that led the nation in recruitment and retention," said Sprynczynatyk. "Maj. Gen. Murry also recognized the importance of Camp Grafton near Devils Lake and worked hard to develop it into a first rate training facility."

Murry's efforts led to the construction of the 800-person barracks and readiness center at the Camp as well as securing additional maneuver training area to the south. The firing range complex at Camp Grafton South is named for him because of his initiative and vision in developing a much needed area for Guardsmen to fire and train with their weapons.

"In addition to his military service, Maj. Gen. Murry served the citizens of North Dakota for more than four decades in several key positions," Sprynczynatyk added. "He was a mentor and trusted advisor to me and so many others, and was truly dedicated to a life of public service. Our entire National Guard family mourns his passing."

After retiring from the North Dakota National Guard in 1984, Murry served as director of the Garrison Conservancy District until 1993. He was an active member of the North Dakota Bar Association, past commander of Veteran of Foreign Wars (VFW), Gilbert N. Nelson Post #1326, Bismarck, associate member of the Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws and received many awards for his leadership contributions from a wide spectrum of civilian and military organizations.

In his last public appearance on Memorial Day, he delivered the keynote speech at the North Dakota Veteran's Cemetery highlighting the service of World War II veterans. This speech was so popular that it was published in the North Dakota National Guard's Guardian magazine the following month.

Murry is a graduate of the U.S. Army War College, Command and General Staff College and the Judge Advocate General Reserve Components General Staff Course. His military decorations include the Combat Infantry Badge, Glider Badge, Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal (with "V" device for valor), American Defense Service Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, European-African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Belgian Fourragère, and Netherlands Orange Lanyard.

Services will be held Sept. 2 at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bismarck. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. at the North Dakota Veteran's Cemetery. Full military honors will be rendered by the North Dakota National Guard Military Funeral Honors Team and VFW Post #1326.

——

Since the 2001 terrorist attacks on America, the North Dakota National Guard has mobilized more than 3,500 Soldiers and more than 1,800 Airmen in support of the Global War on Terrorism. Currently, about 150 North Dakota Guardsmen are serving overseas while more than 4,000 remain in the state for emergency response and national defense. For every 10,000 citizens in North Dakota, 52 serve in the North Dakota National Guard, a rate that's more than four times the national average.

You’re needed by our troops more than ever before

Dear Soldiers' Angel:

I'm writing you and our other most loyal friends. Last month was the deadliest yet in Afghanistan and our troops need to hear from us now more than ever.

I desperately need your help.

Here's why:

Right now I have 300 pallets of goods to send the troops. That's roughly 660,000 pounds of comfort items for our men and women serving in war zones overseas.

Even simple things we take for granted, like coffee and socks, are some of our most requested items from our troops in the field.  And we have a warehouse full of these goods, ready to go.

So what's the problem? We still don't have the funds for shipping, which are astronomical.

You can just imagine how much it would cost to ship that much weight anywhere.  That's 330 tons of materials for our troops.

Multiply that figure because we're shipping it half-way around the world.  Then multiply if further because it's going into an area without many roads or other infrastructure.  And multiply it even further because it's going into a warzone.

That's what you and I are faced with. Yes, we need a miracle.

To make matters worse, August has always been a slow month for donations.  Families are on vacation, people are outside engaged in activities with friends and loved ones.  But our needs for supporting our troops are actually greater than ever before, regardless of the summer plans of our supporters.

That's why I'm writing you.  My sincere prayer is this message will prompt you to send your emergency contribution today - - right now, while you are thinking about it.

After all, what can I tell our soldiers, Marines, airmen and sailors?  That we can't help them because people are on vacation?  That their medical recovery needs to be put on hold?

That we here at home have forgotten about all they're doing for us overseas?

I just can't bring myself to do that. And knowing what I know about you and how much you love and support our brave troops, I don't think you'd want me to, either.

I have no hope of providing for these needs, unless I come to you and my other loyal friends with this emergency plea for help.

Please don't put this message aside and go on to anything else.

Could you give just $20 or $25 to help at this critical time?

Maybe you could give $50 or $100 or even $500 or more, to help make up for those who can't give us much.

Your tax-deductible contribution for $20 or $25, or whatever amount you're best able to give at this time would mean so much to our troops who have already sacrificed so much.

Soldiers' Angels doesn't receive taxpayer funds.  We rely on the loyal financial support of good friends like you.

I hope you renew your support with your very best tax-deductible contribution –- today!

Thank you so much for your friendship and support.

Most Gratefully,

Patti Patton Bader
Founder and Chairman
Soldiers' Angels

P.S.  Last month was the deadliest yet for our troops in Afghanistan.  They need to hear from us at home, to know we love and support them even while their struggles have all but disappeared from the national media.

We have roughly 300 tons of material to send, and no way to send it because we can't pay for the shipping.

We need a miracle.  Please, can you be a part of that miracle today with a gift of $20 or $25, or even $100 or $500 or more?

Deb Bailey understands the needs at women's shelters around the country. We need to get diapers to children at the women's shelter. Deb states, "My last visit was July 13 and a newborn only had 2 diapers to her name". We are taking all sizes from newborn to size 6 along with pull-ups as well.
Photobucket We are as well assisting children with school supplies such as; glue sticks, scissors, No. 2 pencils, colored pencils, large pink eraser, water-based marker, four-ounce bottle of white glue, spiral-bound or composition notebooks, three-ring binder, loose-leaf notebook paper, pocket folders, ruler with English and metric measurements, scotch tap, stapler and backpack.
To donate please email us for our shipping info and for a thank you in return, we will post your site links in our magazine. powerwomenmagazine@gmail.com
We aim to assist mothers and children in shelters with the basics of diapers and school supplies.
Newly appointed photojournalist, Pamela Bussi stated- "I am delighted that Deb Bailey is behind this fundraiser. This is a great way to assist mothers and children". As a volunteer at a homeless shelter I understand the impact of helping children.
