I want to say a special thank you to all of you that attended the ceremony at the Capitol on Monday when the Gold Star plates were dedicated. It meant a lot to the families that were there to see so many people in support of this dedication.

Monday, October 5, 2009: 47 soldiers with Company C, 2-285th Aviation Battalion will be departing Bismarck, for Iraq, on Monday morning at 10:00. They are flying out with the Blackhawk helicopters and are doing a fly over of the State Capitol building.
Wednesday, October 7th. The 2009 Annual NDANG Retirees' Breakfast. Another BIG event of the season! The breakfast will be at the 119th Wing dining facility. Friday, October 23-25, 2009—NDNG Volunteer Academy Minot at the Grand International Inn. The Volunteer Academy's are trainings offered four times a year to individuals who are interested in becoming members of a Family Readiness Group (FRG). Military personnel are also encouraged to attend to better understand the processes and workings of an FRG. This weekend event is packed full of invaluable trainings, speakers and information to help better prepare you and your family for military life and deployments. November 5-6, 2009: Supporting Children of the National Guard and Reserve Institute© Military Child Education Coalition Fargo, North Dakota. The Military Child Education Coalition's™ Supporting Children of the National Guard and Reserve Institute© is a professional development program for educators and professionals to reach out in a support network to the children and families of the National Guard and Reserve. The conference includes two continental breakfasts, two lunches, two break refreshments and conference materials (no registration, meal, or resource material cost to participants). The curriculum, content, process, and delivery are correlated with the National Staff Development Council's Standards and the National Standards for School Counseling Programs. Because the Institute is very interactive and participation is required to fully benefit from this training, participants must commit to attend both days. See notes for registration form. It provides concerned adults with information to help support children during these times of uncertainty and gives them the framework to enable them to support families to ensure that their children have the tools to bounce back from life's storms and stressors. GFAFB commander reassigned to Illinois
The base commander at Grand Forks Air Force Base has been reassigned and will take command at a base in Illinois next month. Col. John Michel said he was notified of the reassignment last Thursday. A change of command ceremony will be held at 3:19 p.m. Nov. 13, significant because he is commanding the 319th Air Refueling Wing.

On Nov. 14, Michel will move to Scott Air Force Base near Belleville, Ill., to become the executive officer for Air Mobility Command. All together, he will have served in Grand Forks for a little more than 16 months when he leaves.
Michel said he was excited about the new job. "It's a great privilege moving there, and to be the executive officer to our most senior leader in the command is a great opportunity," he said.
Grand Forks is Michel's 12th job location in 21 years, he said, but it has impressed him in ways other spots hadn't. His connection to the area goes beyond the base itself and the great personnel, he said.
"This is the most committed community that I've been fortunate enough to be a part of," he said.
Michel is looking forward to sharing the story of the base with his new coworkers, he said, because the ongoing transition out of the tanker business into unmanned aerial vehicles will have an impact on the future of war support and national security.
"There's a lot of exciting possibilities going forward," he said. "I feel very optimistic that the Grand Forks Air Force Base will emerge one of the most relevant platforms in the United States Air Force."
He wasn't here on assignment too long, but Michel said he plans to make personal visits to his 12th hometown in the future. "We're invested emotionally as well, and we've made some very good friends in the city of Grand Forks."

Information on Emergency Payments for Veterans Awaiting VA Educational Benefits
Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki has authorized advance payments up to $3,000 for Veterans who applied for VA educational benefits and who have not yet received their monthly education payments.
If you are a Veteran who has applied for one of VA's education programs and have not yet received your monthly benefit payment for the fall 2009 term, you can request advance payment through this website, www.advancepay.gibill.va.gov.
Advance payments will be issued by the U. S. Treasury within 3 workdays (Monday through Friday) following submission of this request. Payments will be in the form of a check sent through the U.S. mail. You should therefore anticipate an additional 3 days (excluding Sundays) for the U.S. Postal Service to deliver your check.
Visit one of VA's 57 regional offices across the country to immediately receive an advance payment. You will need to bring a government-issued photo ID and your course schedule when you visit the regional office. A list of VA's regional offices is available at www.vba.va.gov/VBA/benefits/offices.asp.
Starting on October 2, regional offices will be open from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm on weekdays for advance payments. Regional offices will also be open on Saturday, October 3, from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon. The advance payments will be reconciled with future education payments owed to our veterans.
