Holiday Message from the Patriot Guard Riders Board of Directors

The Board of Directors would like to take a moment to thank all Patriot Guard Riders and their families for their support and dedication to our mission.  We are all aware of the gift of time, vacation, family events missed, and expenses that each member donates to escort our fallen heroes.  I ask that you each take a moment over the holidays and visit our Letters Pages, and read the words of family members about what you have done for them.

 

Times are tough, but we continue to make a difference that lasts.  The mission is being accomplished every day of the year because the membership won't fail our Heroes and their families.   As an organization, we do continue to face challenges in the coming year, but at the same time; I believe we will grow stronger.  I see efforts coming forward to improve communications and develop advisory committees to help meet the needs for the growth we have had over the past three years.

 

We truly hope that each member will be able to spend their holidays with their own family and loved ones and thank them for understanding the time they have given so that we may stand the flag line.  The National Staff and Board of Directors respectfully wish you all the best over the holidays.

Fellow Patriots,

 

Especially during the holidays, everyone is feeling the pinch of this economic downturn, and these effects are also being felt by the PGR.   Because membership to the Patriot Guard is free – and we will not change that - we rely solely on donations and profits from all of you buying your PGR gear from our store to cover our operating expenses.  These expenses cover our e-mail servers and associated utilities that help us keep the website – the backbone of our mission coordination and communications – up and running. Because of the legal case over the PGR trademark, much of our funds are going toward legal fees, due to the lack of response to our plea for assistance in this area. 

 

The members who have donated thus far come from many different backgrounds, but all have a belief in what we are doing, and want to help out in any way they can.  Some have just made donations of flat amounts; but we have also had some odd donations and the member's explanation of the odd amounts.  One member donated $32.56 – the amount of his weekly cigarette habit.  Another sent us 47.25 – what she spent on breakfast at the bagel shop on her way to work every week.  There are many different stories that came to us on how members came to their donation, but all felt it worthwhile that we keep doing what we do for the families of the fallen, our troops home and abroad.

 

I know that when you think of charitable giving, that names like; The Red Cross or The United Way often come to mind, but also consider the Patriot Guard when you are planning what charities you are going to give to this coming year.  Your support will not only be appreciated by us, but by all of the troops and the families that we assist every day.

 

Patriot Guard Riders, Inc is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a full Charitable Organization (501c3) and any and all donations to it are tax deductable.

"Sure you might not be here on the front line, covered in filth, smelling like hell, your heart going a mile a minute, not knowing what's coming next: if your next step is on that TRP, or if your going to be the latest recruiting tool for some insurgent's new video while they take pot shots at you. But, what you all do with those cards, care packages, cookies is just as important...

When I get a box (or anyone else gets a box) its hard to describe. You find a nice quiet corner and everyone knows not to bother you. You sit there and look over the box as if you had never seen anything like it before. You read who it's from, and a smile crosses your face--you recognize the name. You might already know what's inside, but it does not matter. Some tear it open as fast as they can, others take their time and enjoy every second of it. Once inside, you go through it, every little item once, twice, sometimes three times. It's a very delicate process. You breathe it in and you think of the person who sent it to you. You think of home, family, cars, summer--everything all at once. And for a very short time, you are there away from this SH*T hole. You are grateful. Then you look around and there's always a buddy who is down or having a bad day. You share your box--sometimes just with the one guy, sometimes with everyone--and it's electric. Everyone catches that feeling, and we start talking about home, about things we miss, things we are going to do when we get back, and the heaviness of the day lifts and it's not so bad.

...It's not the "things" that are sent that matter to us, it's the thought. That's the power ALL of you have who take the time to send things. You can change the worst day into the best day, in a split second.

The length of each adoption depends on the branch of service your soldier is in and a number of other factors, but generally averages between six (6) months to twelve (12) months. On occasion, they can be extended, but this is the average. When you adopt you are committing to sending a card or letter each week, and a minimum of 1 or 2 care packages a month. This is one of the most important things that can be done to help bring home a healthy hero; it is so very important for each of them to know they are loved and supported, and your letters and care packages prove just that.

Care packages do not have to be expensive: you can put together your own (we have a detailed list of the most-requested items for you--snacks, hygiene products, and games or magazines).

Dear Friends of America's Troops, It's Christmas Eve and I hope you are filled with the joy and giving spirit of this Season.  I'm sure you are, because you put that giving spirit into action all year 'round with your love for the troops.  From the youngest to the oldest, you have done so much to support our heroes and their families who sacrifice so much so that we can live in safety and comfort. This week, I want to tell you about one of the younger of our volunteers who has done amazing work for the wounded and their families… Christmas for the Wounded Boy Scout Coordinates Party Boy Scout C.J. Riley has done a wonderful thing for the wounded and their families at Brook Army Medical Center.  Showing great initiative, drive and leadership, he created an event to remember, full of fun, joy, good food, and fellowship.  Please click through to see the details of the wonderful party he led! [more]   What a terrific young man!  And he's just one of so many who make me so proud of Soldiers' Angels! Who knew 5 years later we would be here! This has been an extremely challenging year, filled with ups and downs, pain, tears smiles and achievements so small and so large forming a huge swell in morale throughout our military. With the hope of Angels, filled with love for heroes, and standing wingtip to wingtip we have accomplished so many goals.  This year SA has sent out 140,000 Holiday packages and over 600,000 general care packages. We have helped with over half a million dollars in flights for families and heroes, and assisted many VA hospitals and families of deployed heroes, and so much more! Our teams are growing and getting stronger everyday, reaching out and accomplishing the mission they set forth and more. …All because you cared, you stood and were counted. I do not know what the New Year will bring, but I know I walk to it with NO FEAR for I stand with the Angels, and you are the most honorable, the most staunch and the most beautimous beings. This is the greatest time of the year. The holiday season is marked by
bright colored lights, joy, good food, friends, family reunions, and time for
reflection. We Americans are able to celebrate this special season in any
way we choose; anywhere we choose; and with anyone we choose. In a world
whose history is filled with episodes of the strong imposing their will on
the weak, we in the United States are extremely fortunate to be able to
choose how to live our lives in the light of freedom. During Christmas, a
season of gifts, remember one of the greatest gifts of all - freedom.

This freedom is no accident. It was originally earned and fought for by our
Citizen-Soldiers who were later joined by full-time professional active duty
armed forces. Today, working together, our Citizen-Soldiers and airman, as
well as our active duty servicemen and women perform their duties all across
the globe, all in the interest of our national security. This service
usually comes at the price of separation from all things familiar: family
and friends and the comforts of home. Their courage and dedication continue
to keep us safe and extends freedom and peace to citizens of other lands. We
are truly grateful for their service to our country, and for the support and
sacrifice of their families.

As we gather together to celebrate this holiday season with our loved ones,
please pause and remember our brave men and women in uniform who contribute
so much to make our lives comfortable and secure. Please take a moment to
reach out to the families of all of our deployed Soldiers, Marines, Sailors,
Airmen and Coast Guardsmen. Please reflect on their service, and reach out
to those that have lost loved ones. Those that have paid the ultimate
sacrifice are especially missed this time of year. We appreciate their
sacrifice, honor their memories and always remember that their service and
sacrifice helps keep us free.

Long after the memories fade from this holiday season, the service of our
fighting men and women on behalf of our nation will live on and continue to
contribute to our liberty and our security. When they leave to serve, we
pray for their safe return; when they return, we proudly welcome them home as
we celebrate with them and their families.

First Lady Mikey and Connie join us in wishing all North Dakotans a very
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. From our families to yours, may the
peace, tranquility and goodwill of the season reach out to every home and to
every heart in the upcoming year. May the true spirit of Christmas and the
holiday season extend throughout the New Year.

Today, I received a holiday gift on my doorstep.

Today, I received a holiday gift on my doorstep.
 
I picked it up and looked at it carefully.
 
The shiny paper glistened in the sun. 
 
 
 
 
The note on the package said,
 
"Go ahead, open me. I am more than a pretty package. Look inside."
 
 
 
 
 
 
As I looked at the bow, I noticed it was a bit tattered, as if it had been through some rough times.
 
The edges were a bit scuffed up and frayed, yet still the bow was neatly tied.
 
The paper was many different bits and pieces taped together.. like a quilt.

It gave me a lot of comfort knowing that someone took the time and energy to put these peices all together to cover the next layer, which was a cardboard box.

It looked like it had been around the block a few times, recycled... but still sturdy.
 
Carefully opening the box, I peeked in.

I could not believe how much was packed into that strong small box.
 
It was like an explosion of color with fireworks bursting out of the box.
 
 
 

It was full of music and sunshine and rainbows.
 
It had walks in the park and education and snowboarding tucked inside.
 
It was full of hugs and kisses and laughter. It had cartoons and books and travel.
 
It was festive and creative and full of emotion.
 
 
 
 
 
It had stars and stripes...
 
It was full of freedom.
 
Freedom.
 
Sweet Freedom.

 Governor, Adjutant General to Announce Return of N.D. Soldiers and Airmen
 
BISMARCK, N.D. Tuesday, Gov. John Hoeven and Maj. Gen. David Sprynczynatyk, North Dakota National Guard adjutant general, will announce the scheduled return of North Dakota National Guard Soldiers and Airmen from Iraq, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates.
 
News of the North Dakota Army National Guard's 191st Military Police Company return from Iraq will be announced to family and friends of the mobilized Soldiers on Tuesday, Dec. 23 at 9:30 a.m. in the Raymond J. Bohn Armory theater in Bismarck. The same news will be shared with families and friends in Fargo, as will the news of North Dakota Airmen returning from across the globe. That announcement will take place at 2 p.m. in the Fargo Armed Forces Reserve Center theater.
 
Airmen from the Civil Engineer Squadron, as well as one from the Communications Flight Group, have been serving in Kuwait since late August 2008, and firefighters from the squadron have been mobilized to Iraq since early September 2008. Additionally, Airmen from the Services Flight will be returning from the United Arab Emirates, where they have been since September. In all, about 40 Airmen are preparing to return home.
 
The 191st Military Police Company, which is  headquartered in Fargo with units in Bismarck and Mayville, mobilized Jan. 18, 2008. It includes 182 Soldiers who hail from 40 communities. Since arriving in Iraq, the unit has been performing military police tasks, such as security operations and maneuver support, in the Baghdad area. It is commanded by Capt. Ben Cleghorn and 1st Sgt. Kevin Keefe is the senior noncommissioned officer.

Blue Angels to headline Fargo show

FARGO (AP) - The Navy's elite aerial demonstration team is coming to Fargo this summer, August 22 & 23, 2009.

Fargo Air Sho officials say the Blue Angels will headline the 2009 exhibition at Hector International Airport. The six-member flight team will be joined by over 40 support personnel.

The Blues Angels have performed in Fargo in 2007, 2005, 2002 and 1997.

The squadron appears at 35 shows a year.

Air Sho officials said expenses for the show are about $400,000. Proceeds go the Roger Maris Cancer Center and other nonprofit groups.

Outreach Team Help Veterans

Find Programs and Benefits

 

 

A team of six outreach specialists are blanketing the communities of North Dakota in search of Veterans from all services to aid them in finding programs and incentives available to them. The Outreach Team for North Dakota Veterans is a confidential service that follows up with Veterans within the state and provides care by working in conjunction with local Veteran organizations including County Veterans Service Officers, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and Vet Centers.

 

"What we do is connect North Dakota Veterans from any service, or any time of service, with resources they need," said Angela Christensen, military outreach specialist. "These resources can include information on educational programs, financial assistance, marital counseling, help with substance abuse and a variety of other areas."

 

The Military Outreach program was initiated to support the North Dakota National Guard's Reintegration Program, which is designed to support North Dakota Guardsmen and their families as they return home from active-duty mobilizations.

 

1^{st Lt. Rachael Walters, North Dakota National Guard Reintegration officer, said the Military Outreach program was an obvious and necessary addition to the Reintegration Program.}

"While we make every effort to care for Soldiers and Airmen in the North Dakota National Guard upon their return from deployments, oftentimes we find that there are a number of Veterans who are not aware of the programs and benefits available to them," Walters said. "By launching the Military Outreach program we are able to foster a community that takes pride in giving our Veterans the proper welcoming home they deserve."

 

Christensen said the outreach team finds clients through referrals made by the different Veterans organizations as well as Job Service North Dakota and homeless shelters. They also contact Veterans via phone calls and by dropping off business cards with local vendors. Walters said word-of-mouth and reaching out to the communities helps reveal the benefits that the Military Outreach team can provide.

 

In addition to meeting with North Dakota's Veterans, the Outreach Team can assist family members and employers.

"We're more than happy to meet with anyone," Christensen said. "We may not always be able to give them what they're looking for, but we can evaluate their needs and find out who can best help and serve them."

 

While the Military Outreach program has only been operational for two months, the Outreach Team has established a number of long-term goals including initiating contact with every North Dakota National Guard Veteran who has served in the Global War on Terrorism by telephone or letter. So far, they have reached 90 clients whom they have helped with various resources, including Veterans from the Korean War, Vietnam War and even World War II.

 

Christensen said another goal is to reach Veterans who live in the rural communities of North Dakota. These service members do not always have access to information about Veterans' programs and incentives.

 

"Programs and resources are always changing, too," Christensen said. "It makes it very difficult to keep up on these benefits. We're glad to be able to help out with that."

Walters agrees.

 

"Sometimes an ear is all we need to provide. It's nice to know that someone is there to listen. We strive to help Veterans help themselves through kindness and support as well as benefits and care services," she said.

What does ISFAC stand for?

The Inter-Service Family Assistance Committee (ISFAC) is a voluntary military cooperative partnership organized to provide multi-service networking for training and assistance to ensure Total Force Family Readiness.

Our purpose is to provide assistance to families regardless of service component.

The goal of the ISFAC is to strengthen existing family assistance delivery systems in the event of mobilization, deployment, or natural disaster through the interaction of committee members.

 

 

Many issues surrounding quality of life and family well-being can only be addressed by states. Across the nation current focuses are being developed in regards to spouse employment, including unemployment compensation for transferring military spouses, in-state tuition allowances, financial readiness, education, and the pressing needs of severely injured service members and their families. Many state leaders share our concern for the welfare of our Active Duty, Guard, and Reserve service members and their families living within their borders, and we look forward to making significant progress in the future.

North Dakota ISFAC is currently focusing on six key topics; family support, educational benefits, license and registration benefits, tax and financial breaks, state employee
benefits and other special protections.

Troop Support Group Program Series

How are you doing:) I was not sure if this would be of interest to you. I hope you are all doing great and wish you and your family and friends a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.   I am sending this to corporations, organizations, ministries and individuals who we know are involved in some way in supporting our troops, their families, the wounded, those with PTSD or TBI, Gold Star Families and More.   In case you did not see our end of the year newsletter go to: http://talkingwithheroes.com/product_info.phpcPath=49&products_id=1346    We are launching a new series on Talking With Heroes mid February 2009.   Our 2009 Troop Support Group Program Series is for  Military Support Groups and Veterans Groups who have projects to help our troops, their families, the wounded and more. This will also include Corporations, Ministries and more who are doing their part in supporting our troops.   This Troop Support Group Program Series will be  similar to what I have been doing with some military support groups two years in a row where they have an entire hour on Talking with Heroes to present to our listeners about who they are, what they do, new projects coming up  and how people can get involved.   You would choose who your guests are. All the interviews will happen via phone line. And we will do these all LIVE over the internet on one of our audio networks.   This series will be as many as 10 or more one hour programs depending on how many of you receiving this decide this would be a benefit to you. This Series will air over a two to four week period during week nights so that we have more listeners.   I do not make a profit on what I do with Talking with Heroes. Everything we have accomplished in the past three years has been mostly a result of sponsors and some loans.   Most people know that I have not had a car for three years, I have no furniture here where I work and live, no personal income and any savings I brought into this project was gone over two years ago. Yet in the past two years we have brought back more progress stories from our troops and Iraqis than most of the media combined. And those interviews and footage along with the events with military support groups over the past two years are still being listened too and now being watched on www.myfbn.com channel 4.   On some of the programs I agreed to do in 2008 I ended up having to borrow money to fulfill a commitment I made to the group after I found out a few weeks before their events that they were in fact not going to be able to find the sponsors to cover my costs. I can not do that anymore.   The troops who I was supposed to embed with late 2008 and early 2009 have great progress stories to share with all of America. Most of these units who have been deployed from 12-15 months away from their families  will be heading back home in the first quarter of 2009. Some have already started coming home. Many thousands of families like mine are eagerly looking forward to welcome home our loved ones. I have offered to some of these units to give their soldiers and leadership a forum after they come back from their leaves to share their stories.   The following is how you can be a part of our Troop Support Group Program Series for early 2009:   You would  have one of these one hour programs and you would choose who I interview. Your guests could be your leadership, some of your volunteers, some of your sponsors and some of the troops who you have helped. Based on our previous experiences you would probably not want to have more than 8 guests including yourself.   We have been working on what the costs would be for us to launch this series. The cost for each one hour program would be $240.00. This does not have to come out of your groups troop support account but could come from one or more of your current sponsors who would then be the sponsors of the program.   For Corporations perhaps as you are now building your troop support budgets for 2009 you could add this to your budgets.   As soon as your one hour program is over I will send the MP3 of the program to you. You can then use this as a promotional or infomercial type of help to your ongoing efforts in 2009. You could send it out to all your supporters, link to it from your home page and use it any way that would help you do more in 2009.   My plan is to start this new series of programs mid February. We will go live with them during week nights. Once they air they are there for people to listen to 24/7 plus I will air them on my regular Sunday night program on Sunday nights.   The next series of programs will be with those units who have been serving in Iraq or Afghanistan over the previous 12-15 months who would like to get their stories out. I will either go to their bases or do those interviews over the phone.   Part of your $240 will pay for the troop interviews programs. Your organization will then be listed on one of those programs as the sponsor of the program.   Please send me your thoughts as soon as possible.
