The Center for Rural Health has been selected to provide support to the federal Office of Rural Health (ORH) within the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The 5-year, multimillion dollar partnership will provide program and regulatory support for rural VA endeavors. North Dakota Rural Hospitals Receive Funds Through UND Center for Rural Health December 11, 2008. The Center for Rural Health disbursed over $289,000 from the Small Hospital Improvement Program (SHIP) to 35 small rural hospitals in North Dakota. North Dakota Area Health Education Center in the News December 3, 2008. Area Health Education Centers help clinics and hospitals recruit and retain health care workers in underserved areas. UND is establishing a center to serve North Dakota. Mary Amundson, UND Center for Rural Health, and Loretta Heuer, UND College of Nursing, were guests on North Dakota Public Radio's "Hear It Now" to discuss the new AHEC program. Clarity Group, a leading provider of healthcare risk, quality and patient safety software and consulting services, and the Critical Access Hospital (CAH) Quality Network of the North Dakota Center for Rural Health have joined forces in a pilot project to improve patient safety across the state in the small and rural hospital settings.  Staff News: Return to Top  Around North Dakota Brad Gibbens attended the Non-Profit Summit: Can We Preserve our Quality of Life, hosted by the Otto Bremer Foundation on November 20, 2008. The event, held at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks, involved approximately 100 representatives of area non-profits to discuss collaboration efforts and to learn more of the new Bremer initiative, the Emergency Fund program. Annabell Hill has joined the Health Workforce Information Center at the Center for Rural Health. As project coordinator, she will coordinate and assist with activities in the areas of financial management, outreach and marketing, web analytics and project assessment, as well as the selection and creation of Web site content. Originally from Las Cruces, N.M., Hill is bilingual in Spanish and English. She earned her bachelor's degree in community health from New Mexico State University. Joely Lee has joined the Rural Assistance Center, Health Workforce Information Center, and VA Office of Rural Health Policy and Planning Group, as the administrative secretary. She will maintain directory databases, coordinate meetings and conference calls, proofread documents, assist in preparation of conferences and workshops and perform other secretarial duties. Lee received her Associate in Arts degree in 1999 from the North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton, ND. Grants under this program seed new projects or enable an organization to pilot a new idea or approach. North Dakota Rural Development Funds Available Organizations looking to expand, buy new equipment, or any qualifying project may be eligible for low interest rates through the Impact Foundation?Dakota CDC Intermediary Relending Program (IRP). Utilizing Health Information Technology (IT) to Improve Health Care Quality Supports demonstration research grants that rigorously study health IT implementation and use to improve the quality, safety, effectiveness and efficiency of health care in ambulatory settings and in the transitions between care settings. Costs are limited to $1.2 million over three years with no more than $500,000 in total costs in a given year. Small Research Grant to Improve Healthcare Quality through Health IT Supports different types of small research studies including (1) small pilot and feasibility or self-contained health IT research projects, (2) secondary data analysis of health IT research, and (3) economic (prospective or retrospective) analyses of health IT implementation. This grant is limited to $100,000 for up to two years of funding. Exploratory and Developmental Grant to Improve Health Care Quality through Health IT Supports the conduct of short-term preparatory, pilot, or feasibility studies that are needed to inform future health IT implementations such as the conduct of a health IT research demonstration grant. These projects are limited to $300,000 over two years with no more than $200,000 total costs in a given year.
