Gov Hoeven proclaims AUGUST 7, 2009 as PURPLE HEART DAY

PROCLAMATION 
PURPLE HEART DAY 
AUGUST 7, 2009
 
WHEREAS, North Dakotans recognize the sacrifices made by service members in
wars and conflicts throughout America's history; and 
 
WHEREAS, the Purple Heart Medal - originally established by George Washington
 on Aug. 7, 1782, and later revived by Gen. Douglas MacArthur in 1931 - is
 presented to military members in recognition of wounds received as the result
 of enemy actions; and 
 
WHEREAS, Purple Heart Day is a great opportunity for Americans to pause,
 reflect, remember and honor our brave servicemen and women who were wounded
 on the battlefield or who paid the ultimate sacrifice with their lives; and 
 
WHEREAS, we remember and honor the patriots who have been wounded or killed
 in action, as well as the families who also bear the impacts of war, and 
 
WHEREAS, North Dakotans are encouraged to remember the heroes across our
 state, both living and deceased, who have been awarded the Purple Heart
 Medal, and to honor all of our veterans and those currently serving at home
 and abroad for their outstanding service to this state and nation.
 
NOW THEREFORE, as the Governor of the State of North Dakota, I do hereby
 proclaim August 7, 2009, as PURPLE HEART DAY in the state of North Dakota.
