United Pulse Trading Launches Grand Opening While Oakes Manufactuer to Stay JLG, a subsidiary of Oshkosh Trucking, had planned to discontinue production at the company's Oakes facility, but Gov. Hoeven announced that the company will maintain operations at the Oakes facility. The company will continue producing aerial facilites. Hoeven: JLG in Oakes to Continue Operations United Pulse Trading recently celebrated their grand opening of a $7.5 million pea and lentil processing plant in Williston. The new facility is capable of cleaning, calibrating, peeling, splitting and color sorting 75,000 metric tons of peas and lentils, making it the largest lentil and pea splitting company in the Americas. When Christy Schafer was engaged, her future husband, Dan, asked her if she would move away with him. She made it clear that she would move away for a while, but they would be coming back to North Dakota some day. In 2002, the couple moved to Minneapolis so Dan could complete his aviation mechanic training and begin his career. Christy, who had earned bachelor's and master's degrees from NDSU, began work as a logistics analyst for a large corporation. But they still wanted to call North Dakota home. "We both had good jobs in Minneapolis, so that isn't what drove us to return," she said. "North Dakota offers the type of lifestyle we wanted." A Network of Support In November 2007, Dan moved to Mandan and began training as an apprentice mechanic with Minnkota Power in Center. Christy stayed behind to sell their house, a process which took 10 months. Two months after the closing on their Minneapolis house, Christy was offered a newly created position as the logistics analyst for Cloverdale Foods in Mandan. "People who know me say I network all the time," she said. "Quite honestly, my networking helped land my job at Cloverdale." She contacted friends in the Bismarck-Mandan area, asking for their help in distributing her resume. One friend sent the resume to the vice president of human resources at Cloverdale Foods Company. "Cloverdale managers looked at my resume and saw an opportunity on paper with someone they had never met," Schafer said. "They brought me in for several meetings and created a new position for me. I give kudos to the company for being so progressive." Home and Family Christy's Minneapolis friends had playfully teased her about returning to North Dakota, asking what North Dakota offered that Minnesota did not. "If you're born and raised in North Dakota, it's always a part of you," she said. "I think most people who move away have a longing to be back, and family is a big reason. Most of us grew up in close-knit extended families and have strong family values ourselves." The couple is getting used to being recognized when they're out, something they view as a benefit of coming home. "North Dakotans are good people with strong work ethics, strong family networks and a willingness to help others," she said. "I think that's the North Dakota way." Food Fun at the State Fair The 2009 North Dakota State fair was enjoyed by nearly 297,000 people this year and the concert line-up probably had a lot to do with that. Some of the Tourism team got a taste of the fair too. Literally! Fred Walker, international marketing director, clearly must have worked up on appetite taking in all the sites and sounds. Watch: Fred vs Food at the Fair Hidden Hot Spot - North Dakota has many hidden gems that are hot spots in disguise. Sixty-five to 75 million year old fossil sites containing dinosaur and other fossils have recently been discovered at multiple sites in the beautiful and rugged badlands. This summer digs were conducted in Marmarth, Medora, Rhame and Whiskey Creek. If paleontology is your thing, then take a visit to the Dakota Dinosaur Museum in Dickinson where you'll find 11 full-scale dinosaurs, a real Triceratops skeleton and one of teh best Triceratops skulls ever found. The North Dakota Agricultural Products Utilization Commission (APUC) approved $33,925 in funding to three agricultural projects at its quarterly meeting at the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame in Medora July 23. ul> ED&F Welcomes New Energy Business Development Manager The North Dakota Department of Commerce has hired Michael Fladeland as manager of Energy Business Development. Fladeland has 24 years of experience in the energy industry and has worked for many years with economic and community development. He will be responsible for coordinating energy-related development efforts in the state including projects relating to wind, coal, oil and renewable fuels as well as transmission issues.
